In the Dwarven District, you can access the Deeprun Tram, which connects Stormwind with Ironforge, allowing direct travel between the two cities without cost or risk of attack by NPC creeps.

This city also contains the instance Stockades, which is very short and lacking excellent loot. Most people go there for exp or to fill time while waiting in SW. I found myself going there late 20s early 30s.

This is the main city of the Humans.
It houses some of the greatest human NPC's and has a great deal to do with many of the important quests within world of warcraft.
Ruled by the Boy King. you will find him and the disguised Onyxia
Lady Prestor in stormwind keep.

There is also a instance located within the city. the stockades which provides a short yet beneficial romp for players level 24+

Don't forget to do the quests, they give you the most bang for your buck!

The main city of humans, and the biggest city for easter eggs in azeroth, from little timmy's kitten, to the stormwind vault (Burning crusade). You could spend all day in this town and not get bored, with the hustle and bustle of the active trade district, and the Stormwind keep which is normally always packed with high level players waiting for the battlegrounds.
Stormwind is the heart of azeroth.

This is the capitol of the humans of Azeroth. The child king anduin wyrm rules from the keep alongside highlord bolvar who is actually the big cheese in Stormwind. The city is absulutley marvelous and in my opinion is the coolest of all the allaince cities.

Its located in Elwynn Forest not far from the Human Starting area of Northshire. Just follow the road northwest out of goldshire and before long youll see the cities gates. At the entrance there is a bridge that is required to cross to actually get inside the city. Along the bridge are statues of heroes of the Alliances past. Most of these heroes are presumed dead as read on their plaque (but some of them will be in outland in the Burning Crusade Expansion).

After crossing the bridge youll wind up in The Trade District. Its pretty much a kind of marketplace. many stores line the road with weapons food and trinkets. The guild master is located here along with the Auction house and the Bank.
if you take a left and go across the canals youll end up in Mage Quarter. Its pretty self explanitory. It is a place mostly for mages and contains Alchemists trainers and mage class trainers and well.

Go north from there and youll end up in the park. The druid trainer is located here. Many Night elfs have seemed to find their home in the park of Stormwind.

Go right from the Park and youll be at Cathedral Square. Cathedral Square houses the cathedral of light which contains both paladin and priest trainers. This district also has an orphanage in it that has some seaonal quests tied in.

Keep going right and youll be in Dwarven District. Dwarven district is very industrial as you can tell by the smoke cloud in it as soon as you walk in. This area also houses the deeprun tram which can be ridden to Ironforge.

Go south from there and youll be at the last district of Stormwind Old town. Old town is full of shops and also contains a tavern. It alo houses a barracks and the entrance to champions hall where pvp honor rewards are given.

The city also has an instance within its walls the Stockades. The Stockades is a lvl 24-32 instance in which the player accompanied by 4 other players [presumably goes into an overrun prison to complete quests and get loot. it located along the canals just outside mage quarter.

It's a well-known fact that by jumping on certain spots you can exploit a glitch to get 'under' SW. That area might as well continue all the way to the sea, I don't know for sure. (reply to pofffoloo)

Lore comments: Stormwind was one of the last of the original Arathi kingdoms to be founded. The humans founded the city in the high mountains above the Elwynn Forest, where great storms gave the city its name. As their sole bastion of power on the far side of Khaz Modan, Stormwind stood as a glittering symbol of the ingenuity and strength of humanity. At the time of the First War, Stormwind was blessed with great leaders, including King Llane Wrynn, the champion Anduin Lothar, and the mage Medivh. And yet, this golden age of Stormwind was doomed before it even began.

Stormwind's fate was sealed the very night that , the Guardian of Tirisfal, ordchestrated the fathering of her child by . She succesfully passed down the magnificent powers of the Guardian, but her child was possesed, while in her womb, by the malevolent presence of Sargeras. It would be many years before Sargeras took control of her son, Medivh. Stormwind's power only grew in these years, but by Medivh's hand, all of this would come to ruin. Secretely, he brought the Orcs, then servants of the Burning Legion, into Azeroth. The ensuing war waged on Stormwind left the city in ruins, and Medivh was cut down by the men he once called friends. While the armies of Stormwind defeated the orcish horde at Blackrock Spire, it came at the terrible cost of their home.

Led by their champion, Stormwind's refugees departed their ruined homeland. For a time, they lived in Lordaeron as the Second War was waged against the orcs. Again with the leadership of Lord Lothar, the orcs were defeated, and Stormwind's people returned to their city. Lothar and Llane perished in the longyears of war, but Llane was survived by his son, Varian. Under his rule, Stormwind was rebuild to its glittering glory. Even with the mysterious disappearance of Varian and the succession of his son, Anduin, Stormwind maintains a high position in the Alliance, and its strength is worthy of, and due to, the legacy of its great heroes.

Be careful when you are in the water, there is a very strong rare crocadile that spawns in there and it will kill you. so if you're going to go for a swim, look before you leap.

I'm always like to make a group for 5 lvl 70's horde and run in SW and get to the park. there's a building looking like an Inn where guards won't follow you and its pretty safe

Though it dosent say in the fishing section on WoW head you can fish up a bottle that contains the shcematic for the mechanicle squirle here in stormwind. :)

My sister had a friend who knew how to get UNDER stormwind it's a glitch she never told me how to do it But withthat glitch u could go any where and not get killed I saw her do it it looks like the badlands except nothing there but the ground and the mountains,buildings,players, and monsters and 2nd layer of ground above.If u find this glitch please note,u will fall down your only way out is to hearth.I don't know if you'll get Fatigue from walking across the ocean so maybe thats a way out. p.s Fatigue is when your character gets tire of swimming when the bar goes down u start to lose health

I remember the crocadile, its a very very very very Rare spawn. I think its the only city that spawns any type of mob inside the city. It can kill you if you take a swim but really only if your a lowbie.

When I first came across it, It was a skull for me because I was like lvl 20ish but a lvl 60 warrior killed it for me (this was before TBC) he said the croc was lvl 50 if I remember it.

The Croc dropped no blues or greens.

To explain how a croc gets into stormwind lake, is that stormwind has a sewer that is also directed to the lake. To small for any full grown human to go thour, but for the skinny line croc its easy, anyways that is the lore of it.

If you ever see this mob in stormwind lake, which is has a silver dragon portait around his name. TAKE A SCREENSHOT! because odds are you will never ever see it again.

maybe 1 spawn per month or maybe even couple of months. I'v been playing for almost 3 years going onto 4 and only saw the spawn once in my WoW life. An I go in and out of stormwind ALOT.

i was messing around in SW for a while today before logging off and came by a doorway entrance at 26 28 that leads to "Cut-Throat Alley", i've been playing wow for years and never noticed or heard of this alley before, does anybody know if any quests go here or if there is any purpose to it, all that is there is an inn-like building and a load of boxes.

You can hold off on voting him down, he is technically correct. There are two instances that are at least mapped out, if not populated, within the walls of Stormwind. The 2nd is the Vault (WoW Wiki: http://www.wowwiki.com/The_Vault). It was there in WoW Beta, but never fully fleshed out. The Wiki article contains the art for the load screen, as well as the map.

So there's the Stockades, The Vault, and then that highly speculated upon hole in the wall facing the canals. Plus the tram, I guess, is technically an instanced area. Makes me wonder if the Deeprun Tram zone is on the instance servers or continent server...

Anyway, I pulled up the map of SW after reading an article on WoWInsider.com, in an installment of The Queue;

The portal belongs to The Vault, a max level instance akin to the Stockades. But the instance isn't made and the portal doesn't go anywhere. Hopefully one day something will be done with it. You can find out some more information at WoWWiki on The Vault.

I know a big secret about stormwind (well its not a secret but its a glitch) this is how you do it
step 1: go to the trade district tunnel towards mage quater and you will see a crate with 2 barrels next to it.

step 2: jump on then and the jump on the torch closest to you then jump up to the ledge

step 3: walk along the edge of the ledge towards the bow and gun shop until you fall down an invisible hole kinda thingy

step 4: when you land you will lose around 500-1000 health and you will see land for miles

step 5: if you want to get out head southwest and jump into the centre of the pink hole and youl end up in the wizards sanctum, head towards the harbour and jump through one of the walls, jump down one of the pnik holes util it says release spirit then go a little bit to the south west of stormwind main entrance and you will see your corspe, heade west until you find a small crater covered most with a pink hole then zoom in fully and jump and you will end up in one of those tunnels in slaughtered lamb

step 6: there isnt one silly!

step 7: if you cant get out use step 8

step 8: PANIC!

step 9: oh for kael thas's sake just use your hearthstone!

First, as of patch 3.0.8, I am currently standing underneath Stormwind City. Just to clarify that it has not been removed in the slightest.

SECOND, the locksmith is marked because a guard cannot point it out to you, so as to not have hundreds of key-less Azerothians contacting blizzard, or spamming trade chat, they flagged him.

Its just a 3 millimeter wide red flag with a ! in it, in the top right corner of your map, I think you'll survive...

Stormwind City is alot like New York City. It has a Tram like the Subway, a major Harbor, and a Dwarven district like the Irish district. :)

To answer Thrianore's question, it's simple, but sometimes hard, depending on your level. You will have to pass by level 20+, but don't worry, I did this at level 3.

First of all, head to the Dwarven District in Stormwind. Go to the tram and take a ride to Ironforge. Once there, head out of Ironforge, into Dun Morogh.

Now, here, you must go to one of the Outposts, in the Eastern part of Dun Morogh.

To get to the Outposts from the Gates of Ironforge, walk down the path leading to a sign showing locations of places nearby. Take a turn to the left, and keep going east. Keep following the path until the road splits, close to the eastern end of Dun Morogh.

Here is where you may choose which Outpost you would like to take. I would recommend taking a left, leading to the North Gate Outpost. It would be a bit quicker. (I will continue directions if you have used the path to the North Gate Outpost.)

From here you can easily find your way through, go to the tunnel. Once you enter Loch Modan, outside, go down the path until the road again splits. Take a left.

Go down the tunnel and keep going through. Keep following the path, into another tunnel.

Keep going until you've reached the Wetlands. Here most likely you'll run into some 20+ Orcs, so be careful. Once you've gotten out of all the tunnels, you should see Wetlands. (No wonder they called it Wetlands...) Keep following the path down. Once you take a left to keep following the path, on the right there are Spiders. On the right, sometimes, there are Crocolisks. Keep going until the road splits. If you are confused here, look toward the center of the turns, and keep following the path, turning left. Keep going on until you have reached Menithel Harbor.

Here, there is a building right in the middle. Go around it, left or right, and you should see a Harbor. (No wonder they called it Menethil Harbor...) Take the right (Direction, of course.) boat. If you don't see a boat there, wait. It should come soon. Once the boat has come, hop on, matey!

The boat should lead to Auberdine. Once you have come here, go straight forward, where another boat comes. Once again, if it's not there, wait for it. Once it comes, hop on, matey! We're going for another ride!

The boat takes you to Rut'theran Village. If you are confused where to go from here, when you come you should see a purple portal. Enter it, by simply walking into it.

This leads to the Night Elf capitol city, Darnassus. Have fun!

yeh the portal is a practice place. they took away the instance it had a while ago---now its just there for show and for people who glitch behind it. And for those wondering about the construction site to blow down the wall in Stormwind which is currently there for now---it will be down in LK(wrath of the lich king) making stormwind harbor.

The most active part of Stormwind City, usually, is the Trade District. It's home to a convenient inn, several shops and stores, and the city's bank, called a counting house.

Apart from your standard weapon and armor stores, there are a few novelties you should check out. The Visitor's Center is where you should go if you want to manage guilds. Across from that is a cheese store, of all things.

Gryphons, which serve as transportation between Alliance Cities you've visited, have their roost above the gate to the city. To reach their roost, head down the alley on the eastern side of the district. It's behind the cheese shop, if that helps.

A tranquil corner of Stormwind, The Park is the preferred area for the Night Elves of Stormwind. There is a pub and a few shops in the area, and Druids should take note of the various Druid Trainers surrounding the fountain plaza.

This older portion of Stormwind City is a little shadier than newer sections like the Trade District. You'll find Skinning and Leatherworking training at the Protective Hide shop, as well as specialized shops for two-handed weapons, shoes, shields, and blades. There's also a general armor shop and a store devoted entirely to poisons and venoms.

The south edge of the area leads to a split path within a rather impressive-looking walled courtyard. The two buildings located in these barracks cater to Warriors and Rogues. The Warrior's garrison is home to Warrior Trainers, while the Rogue's building, called SI:7, is populated by Rogue Trainers, poison vendors, and shady dealers.

Finally, the Pig and Whistle tavern in the area is key to various quests, including important ones for Warriors. There are Cooking Trainers and suppliers in the kitchens at the back.

Smoke and machines clutter the streets here, but Dwarves will feel right at home. Apart from a few stores selling guns and axes, you can find Trainers for Blacksmithing, Engineering, and Mining. As for Class Trainers, Hunter Trainers can be found in the area as well.

A small alley in this area is called Cutthroat Alley and can be accessed from the canal-side path forming the border to this district. I haven't found anything special in it, but I assume this will change eventually.

The swirling round tunnel found along the eastern wall of the district takes you to the Deeprun Tram station, which operates train-like transportation between Stormwind City and Ironforge City, home of the Dwarves and Gnomes.

http://www.worldofwar.net/cartography/cities/stormwind.php is a good map. You'll see in the Mage Quarter that #1 is the Stockade. Just go into the little keep, you'll see about six guards standing in the middle of the room. As you approach, you'll see that they're at the top of a flight of stairs that runs down into the instance.

The Canal District, or just Canals, serves to divide Stormwind into its various districts. You can use the canals to swim from district to district if you don't feel like running. There are white stairs dotted throughout the canals that will allow you to return to the surface, and there are docks scattered around which are prime fishing spots.

The paths between the canals and the districts, which border the districts themselves, are lined with stores that are usually not as well-known as those that are actually within districts.

Bordering the Market District is a wine shop and flower store. The Mage Quarter's canal-side path houses a library. Surrounding the Cathedral District is a path, along the side of which is a tailoring store. Finally, the entrance to the so-far-empty-yet-dangerous-sounding Cutthroat Alley is on the canal-side path surrounding the Dwarven District.

You can access the Stockade, Stormwind's dungeon, from the canal-side path around the Mage Quarter. A similar building stands to the east, and a gate into it stands at water level and is guarded by two knights. You can swim up to it, but it remains closed.

I dislike the canals, because whenever Stormwind zone lags (which, in my experience, is often), I take a little swim. The lag makes it difficult to swim as well, and hence I've had to retrive my corpse on multiple occasions trying to do such mundane things as buying my sexy female warrior a new robe or deliver thread to a wayward apprentice so he can get to work.

Stormwind Keep is the base of operations for the Stormwind Royalty and its knights. It's rather big, but admittedly fairly empty. You can access several reading rooms in the main building, and at the very end of the imposing hall, you can find the NPCs that are in charge of battlegrounds.

A doorway leads from the hall out into a courtyard. From this little courtyard, you can access the Royal Gallery, which displays statues of key figures in Stormwind history, and the Royal Library, which houses a small quest and a couple of readable books.

The religious center of Stormwind, the area is home to a few stores that sell armor and maces and such. The city's orphanage and city hall are located here as well, each offering a couple of quests for those in the 15-25 range.

The centerpiece of the area is the Stormwind Cathedral. Inside are a few more quest-giving NPCs, as well as Priest and Paladin trainers. Keep a look-out for a vendor and a First Aid trainer as well.

The Mage Quarter, though obviously a mage's paradise, is also worth checking out if you're of another class. There are no less than three taverns, which are great meeting places, as well as a fireworks store, a stave store, and two clothing/textile stores that produce light armors. If you look hard, you'll also find slightly more obscure stores selling reagents and arcane trinkets.

That tower with the spiral walkway is the Wizard Sanctum. To explore it, you'll need to pass through a few magic portals. Within it are Mage trainers and Portal trainers.

The gate to Stormwind City. Also called Stormwind Gate. Adventurers pass through here from Elwynn Forest on their way into Stormwind City proper.

There's not much to do here, but the bridge makes for some pretty scenic dueling...it's quite popular in that effect. Those small patches of rock far below, at the water's edge, aren't anything special, but it's a tranquil place to fish.

While we typically try to avoid making changes that can affect legitimate PvP interactions including players engaging in combat with faction-specific NPCs, this particular issue is noteworthy because of some under-the-hood changes we made some time ago to how the Rallying Cry of the Dragonslayer buff is applied in both Stormwind City and Orgrimmar to improve server performance.

Without getting too deep into the nuts and bolts of what we changed, the important thing to be aware of is that being able to sap Overlord Runthak, Major Mattingly, or Field Marshal Stonebridge during their event dialogue to prevent this buff from going out was not actually possible in original World of Warcraft. Sometime very soon we will be applying a hotfix that will more accurately reflect the correct behavior from original WoW.

These NPCs will still be able to sapped and otherwise crowd-controlled as before, but following this hotfix these effects should no longer prevent the event from playing out and the buff from being applied. Please note that the opposing faction can still attack and kill these NPCs after the quest is turned in but before the dialogue completes and this will interrupt the buff going out. This behavior is correct and has been preserved.
