This week should bring a new high-end smartphone on shelves in South Korea, namely the HTC Sensation, currently available only in a handful of markets around the world.

On Wednesday, May 25th, the new flagship model should be released on shelves in the country via SK Telecom, the largest wireless carrier on the local market.

When released, the smartphone would sport a price tag of 847,000 won, which would be around $780.

Taiwan-based HTC Corporation has just appointed new heads for its operations in Asia, with Jack Tong being responsible for the North Asian region, including South Korea.

In this country, HTC would face strong competition from Samsung and its Galaxy S II smartphone, already available for purchase since late April. Local manufacturers LG and Pantech are strong rivals as well.

However, Tong notes that HTC would still manage to gain traction on the market, the same as other brands did.

“I have to admit it is not easy. The Korean market is the most difficult and challenging market for foreign brands,” Tong said, according to a recent article on Korea Herald.

“It’s difficult for the foreign brands because you have strong local brands and they create a great user experience and they have good marketing skills and enjoy a great relationship with consumers.”

HTC Sensation, the latest flagship model from the company, would help a lot in this attempt to gain the hearts of South Korean mobile phone users.

One step HTC would make in this direction would be the loading of specific content on the handset, Tong explains: “We are investing to provide more contents to include high-definition video, music, local Korean music.”

The handset comes with a 4.3-inch touchscreen display, a fast 1.2GHz dual-core application processor, a 4.3-inch touchscreen display that can deliver a qHD resolution, and an 8-megapixel photo snapper on the back, with 1080p video recording capabilities.

The handset would compete directly with Samsung Galaxy S II, which sports similar hardware specs, though it comes with a slight disadvantage, since HTC locked its bootloader, and users won't be able to run custom ROMs on it.
