NGC 3603 Nebula, a giant HII region in the Carina spiral arm

Carina spiral arm of the southern Milky Way is a prominent star-forming region, which is located 20,000 light-years away from our Solar System. This image shows the young star cluster surrounded by a vast region of dust and gas. The image reveals stages in the life cycle of stars. The nebula was first discovered by Sir John Herschel in 1834 during a visit to South Africa. The image spans roughly 17 light-years.
The HII means ionized hydrogen, this gas is the lightest and most abundant element in the universe, and when it is exposed to the ultraviolet radiation from hot stars the gas becomes ionized. What happens then it that hydrogen atoms are stripped of their only electron, but the proton remains. Then, while the hydrogen atoms become ionized, ions recombine with free electrons to form again neutral atoms. This union makes the electrons emit light at characteristic wavelengths.

This massive HII region contains a very compact open cluster (probably a super star cluster) HD 97950. But by no means is as big as other HII regions in other galaxies. However, this is the closest giant HII region we have and the best resolved one.
The Hubble Space Telescope captures in one single view the entire life cycle of stars. In the upper left of this picture of galactic nebula NGC 3603 is the evolved blue supergiant, called Sher 25. Like the famous 1987A supernova, a unique ring of glowing gas encircles it and it has been considered one of the principal candidates to explode as a supernova in the near future.

The grayish-blue color of the ring and the blobs to the upper right and lower left of the star indicate the presence of chemically enriched material. Near the center, young, hot massive stars dominate the starburst cluster. Meanwhile, the dark clouds at the upper right, which are called Bok globules, probably are in the early stages of star formation. And there is also, to the lower left of the cluster are two compact, tadpole-shaped emission clouds, which scientists believe may be evidence of protoplanetary disks, which eventually condense to form planets.

Hay miles de chispeantes j贸venes estrellas ubicado dentro de la nebulosa gigante NGC 3603. Este “joyero” estelar es uno de los c煤mulos estelar masivos m谩s j贸venes en la V铆a L谩ctea. La Nebulosa NGC 3603 es una regi贸n HII gigante en el brazo espiral de Carina de la parte sur de la V铆a L谩ctea, situada a 20.00 a帽os luz de nuestro Sistema Solar. Esta imagen muestra el joven cumulo estelar rodeado de una vasta regi贸n de polvo y gas. La imagen revela los ciclos de la vida estelar. El primero en descubrir la nebulosa fue Sir John Herschel en 1834 durante una visita realizada a 脕frica del Sur. La imagen se extiende por unos 17 a帽os luz.
HII significa hidrogeno ionizado, este gas es el m谩s ligero y abundante elemento del Universo, cuando este se expone a la radiaci贸n ultravioleta procedente de estrellas calientes el gas se ioniza. Lo que ocurre entonces es que a los 谩tomos de hidrogeno se les quitan su 煤nico electr贸n, aunque su prot贸n permanece. Entonces mientras que el hidrogeno se ioniza, los iones se recombinan con electrones libres para formar de nuevo 谩tomos neutros. Esta uni贸n hace emitir a los electrones una luz con una amplitud de ondas caracter铆sticas.

Esta enorme regi贸n HII contiene un c煤mulo abierto muy compacto (probablemente un superc煤mulo estelar) HD 97950. Pero de ninguna manera esta regi贸n HII es tan grande como la que se ve en otras galaxias. Sin embargo, es la regi贸n HII gigante m谩s cercana y mejor resuelta que tenemos.
El telescopio espacial Hubble en una sola toma captura el ciclo completo estelar de las estrellas. En la parte superior de esta imagen de la nebulosa gal谩ctica NGC 3603 est谩 la evolucionada supergigante azul Sher 25. Y que como la famosa supernova 1987A, contiene un peculiar anillo de gas incandescente rode谩ndola, estando considerada como una de las principales estrellas candidatas a explotar en supernova en un futuro inmediato.
El color azul gris谩ceo del anillo y las manchas de la parte superior derecha y la inferior izquierda indican la presencia de material enriquecido qu铆micamente, cerca del centro, j贸venes calientes y masivas estrellas domina el cumulo creador de estrellas. Mientras tanto, las oscuras nubes de la parte superior derecha, llamadas gl贸bulos de Bok, est谩n probablemente en una fase temprana de formaci贸n estelar. Y tambi茅n tenemos hacia la parte baja de la izquierda dos compactas, nubes de emisi贸n en la forma de renacuajos, que los cient铆ficos creen podr铆an ser la evidencia de discos protoplanetarios, que eventualmente se condensaran en planetas.
