A man sat at an underground station in Washington, D.C.,

and started to play the violin. It was a cold day in January. He

played six Bach(巴赫) pieces for about 45 minutes. It was rush

hour and thousands of people went through the station, most of

them on their way to work.

Three minutes went by and the first person, a middle-aged

man, noticed there was a musician playing. He slowed down and

stopped for a few seconds and then hurried up to meet his schedule.

After a minute, the violinist received his first dollar tip: a young woman threw the money in the box and continued to walk. Then another few minutes went by and someone stood against the wall to listen to him, but the young man looked at his watch and started to walk again. Clearly he was late for work.

During the musician’s performance, only six people stopped and stayed for a while, twenty gave him money but continued to walk. When he finished playing, no one applauded(鼓掌). No one knew the violinist was Joshua Bell, one of the best musicians in the world.

This is a real story. Joshua Bell playing in the underground station was organized by The Washington Post (《华盛顿邮报》) as part of a social experiment. When taking an elevator, do you often push the “close” button? You hope by pushing it, the elevator door will close faster. But what if the button is actually fake (假的)?

Karen Penafiel is the executive director (执行董事) of the US National Elevator Industry. She said that elevators’ “close” buttons are a complete trick, at least in the US, and that doors will not close any faster no matter how hard you push.

In the 1990s the Americans with Disabilities Act (《美国残疾人法案》) was passed in the US. It means all elevators have to stay open long enough to allow disabled (残疾的) people to enter. Only US firefighters and elevator workers can really use the buttons with special keys.

But the buttons aren’t completely useless. According to psychologists (心理学家), fake buttons can make you feel better. They give you a sense of control that can help reduce stress. That’s why some other buttons in our lives are fake, too.

For example, many offices in the US have fake thermostats (温控器). People may feel better when they think they can control the temperature in their workspace.

You were told that traffic light buttons could help make the traffic signals change faster. But they may not really work either.

However, even when people know these little “white lies”, they still push fake buttons. As long as the doors finally close, it seems worthy.

John Kounios is a psychology professor at Drexel University in the US. He told The New York Times that he always pushes the traffic light buttons. “After all, I’ve got nothing else to do while waiting. So why not push the button on the off chance that this one will work?”

69. If you push the “close” button in the US, the elevator door will ________.

A) close immediately B) not be completely open

C) play a trick on you D) not close as fast as you wish

70. In the US, in order for disabled people to go in safely, ________. A) elevator workers will press the “open” button for them B) they will be given a special key to use in the elevators C) all elevators are designed to open long enough D) no “close” button is fixed on the elevators 71. Which of the following is NOT mentioned as fake? A) Thermostat buttons. B) Elevator buttons. C) Traffic light buttons. D) Power buttons. 72. There are quite a few fake buttons in our lives because they can ________.

A) control people’s senses B) help people feel better C) control the temperature D) tell “white lies” 73. The underlined words “on the off chance ” in the last paragraph most probably mean “_____”. A) with the little hope

B) without any plan C) with a great opportunity D) without any possibility 74. The best title for the passage is ________. A) Button pushing society

B) Useless buttons C) Buttons for disabled people

D) Fake elevator buttons

kind and helpful, but always feared applying for a new job.

One day, he gathered up all his strength and decided to attend a job interview.

His appointment was at 10 a.m. and it was already 8:30. While waiting for a bus to the office where he was supposed to be interviewed, he saw an elderly man wildly kicking the tyre (轮胎) of his car. In English, when someone is very angry we say this person “sees red”, just as a bull goes wild after seeing a red cloth. Now it turns out that “seeing red” is not just an

expression for any people, but also a scientific fact.

Researchers at North Dakota State University in the US found that

there is a connection between the color red and anger. Angry people really do

“see red” where others don’t. And a preference for red over blue may even

suggest a more hostile personality.

The study includes a number of experiments. In the first, researchers

asked a group of people which color they preferred, red or blue. Participants

(参加者)then did personality tests. Results showed that those who chose red tended to be more hostile.

During a second test, participants looked at faded images that could be regarded either red or blue. Those who saw red scored 25 percent higher on hostility in the personality test.

“Hostile people have hostile thoughts; hostile thoughts are connected with the color red, and therefore hostile people see this color more frequently.” the researchers told The Independent.

Finally, the participants were told about imaginary situations in which they could take different actions. Results showed that in these situations, red-preferring people were more likely to show that they would harm another person than those who preferred blue.

“An important message from this research is that color can send psychological(心理的)meaning,” the researchers said.

Where does this connection between the color red and anger come from? Scientists said it might be a matter of evolution(进化). In ancient times, poisonous plants and insects could cause wounds and bleeding. So it may have become instinctive(本能的)for people to link color red with danger and threats.

69. “Seeing red” is not just an expression for angry people, but also a_______.

A) legend story B) funny joke

C) scientific fact D) useful suggestion

70. The underlined word “hostile” in the second paragraph means ________.

C) upset D) cheerful

71. During a second test, those who saw red scored 25 percent ________ on hostility in the

personality test.

A) lower B) higher C) more D) less

72. In the final test, the participants were told about _______ in which they could take different

actions.

A) faded images B) the true information

C) the same experience D) imaginary situations

73. Which of the following is NOT true about the study?

A) Participants did personality tests in the study.

B) Participants took three tests in the study.

C) Participants were tested on seven different colors.

D) Blue-preferring people were less likely to harm others.

74. What does the last paragraph mainly talk about?

B) It explains why red is connected to anger.

C) It tells us the importance if evolution.

D) It shows us the poor living conditions of ancient people.

Outside Mexico City

Dear Mariana,

Today we arrived safe. It was a long and dangerous trip over the ocean. The winter storms were strong. We were always a little sick from high waves.

The journey from the shore(海岸) to Mexico City is also long and dangerous. There are robbers in the countryside. We will travel together with the other ship passengers, thinking we will be safer as a group. Tomorrow we will travel into the city to find our uncle.

Father says it will take a year for this letter to reach you. The trip from New Spain to Spain is very long.

Your loving brother,

Tomas ……………………………………………………………………………………………………………………

April 20, 1539

Mexico City

Dear Mariana,

Father and I finally arrived at Mexico City. Here, old buildings are being pulled down; new

ones are being built. Just around the corner from Uncle’s city house, Aztec workers are pulling down

a small, beautiful pyramid. Father says it is one of the last Aztec temples(庙宇).

In the center of the city, I met an Aztec boy named Carlos. He speaks a little Spanish. Carlos

learns Spanish at his new school. He told me that the Spanish set up new schools for the Aztecs.

There he got his new name, Carlos. He says he likes his new school but misses his old city. I wonder

what this city used to be like before Cortes came.

Tomorrow we will go to Uncle’s farmland. He and Father are talking about the Aztec workers

that Father will oversee(监管).

Your brother, Cortes

Did you know Aztecs?

The Aztecs were the Native Americans who lived in Central Mexico from the early 1300s to the early 1500s. The Aztecs were powerful and founded the capital city of Tenochtitlan, where Mexico City is today. The Spanish conqueror Cortes arrived in 1519. After many battles, he conquered the Aztecs. Last summer, I began the biggest adventure of my life. I moved

from a tiny city in England to one of the largest cities in the world.

As the plane landed in Beijing, I felt excited that I’d finally arrived

after months of planning. One of the first things I did was visiting one

of the city’s hutongs(胡同). Strolling (闲逛) around the narrow streets,

the warm air was filled with the smell of delicious food as people played mahjong and rode their old-fashioned bikes. This was the first moment I thought, “Wow, I’m in China.”

Beijing couldn’t be more different to my home city, Preston, which has a population of just 114,000. It has one shopping street that’s around 500 meters from one end to the other and on Sunday, all the shops close at 4:00 pm. There isn’t a great deal of choice when it comes to restaurants, either, and as a fan of food, I cou ldn’t wait to see what Beijing has to offer. I still don’t have a favorite dish here yet. I’m still happily working my way through the city’s countless restaurants to try figure that out.

I’m slowly getting used to the fast-paced (快节奏的) lifestyle and different way of life, but I still find some habits here quite strange and humorous.

British people are raised to not make any sort of bodily noise at the dinner table or in public, so to hear the loud noise of Chinese diners or the throat-clearing (清嗓子) sounds of colleagues (同事) was a funny culture shock at first.

Something else I’ve discovered is the attention that being a foreigner brings. On the subway or in streets and restaurants, some people stare (盯着看) and try to take secret photos of me. It seems that I am a famous person or a popular star.

In the future, I hope to see many other parts of China. My dream is to buy a motorbike and travel from one end to the other of this beautiful country, taking photos and meeting new people along the way.

My adventure in China is only just beginning, and I can’t wait to see how it turns out.

Hi Jim!

I’m sending this email from a computer in a youth hostel, I’m on a

hiking trip with my brother. We’re walking along Hadrian’s Wall. It

crosses England from one side to the other. The Romans built it about

1,900 years ago. This was the edge of the Roman Empire (帝国) then.

Archaeologists (考古学家) say the Romans probably built the wall to

keep out the people who lived north of here.

There’s still quite a lot of the wall left, but in some places it’s

disappeared completely. Over the years, people took the stones away to build houses and roads. You can walk along the wall---or where it used to be --- for more than 120 kilometers. We’re going to do all of it! Today we did about 20 kilometers. We’re camping some nights

and staying in youth hostels on other nights.

It’s really interesting. Some parts of the wall have been rebuilt, so you can imagine how it all looked. Yesterday we went to a museum. It showed what

life was like for the Roman soldiers who had to live here all those years. Lots

of them hated it because it was so cold and wet.

But it hasn’t been cold and wet for us this week! The weather’s been nice. There are lots of people doing the walk, and the campsites and hostels are pretty crowded. Someone told us it’s the most popular place for tourists in the north of England.

That’s all for now. Someone wants to use the computer.

Nothing in Wiley Post’s early years showed that he would become a famous pilot one day.

His family were farmers. In 1913, Wiley saw something that forever

changed his life – an airplane. Wiley Post began to study everything he

could find about flying. Post finally rode in an airplane in 1919. After his

first ride, Wiley Post knew that flying was something he could learn to do.

Wiley Post began his career (职业生涯) in flying, not as a pilot, but as

a performer who jumps from airplanes using a parachute (降落傘). He did

this with a group that performed flying tricks to earn money.

Wiley Post then decided the only way to become a good pilot was to buy an airplane of his own. He needed more money than he earned in the flying show. He went to work in the oil-producing areas of Texas. But he damaged his left eye in an accident. Doctors had to get rid of his eye. Judging distance is difficult without two eyes. Wiley Post began teaching himself to judge distance with only one eye. It took a long time, but he succeeded. In 1928, he got a job flying the plane that belonged to a rich oil producer from Oklahoma called F.C.Hall. In 1930, Post entered the National Air Races in this plane and won.

On June 23, 1931, Wiley Post and Gatty had flown around the world. But many people said Gatty was the real hero. He had guided the flight. This hurt Post. Wiley Post began to plan another flight around the world. This time he would go alone.

On July 15, 1933, Post took off from Floyd Bennett Field in New York. He became the first person to fly from New York to Berlin without stopping. He had flown around the world in eighteen

hours and forty-nine minutes.

Here is a report on schools in the United States of America.

1 Introduction

Some of you may wonder: What are schools in the US like? Are there more activities than schools in Hong Kong? Are there more teachers? This report aims to answer some of these questions.

2 Education system

There are two types of schools in the US: public and private schools. Students studying at public schools do not have to pay tuition fees (学费) because the schools get funding (资金) from the government. Private schools, however, have to seek their own funding, so they may charge parents a high fee.

Students in the US have three years of preschool education. They enter elementary school at the age of six. There are four different ways for them to get their high school diploma (学位证书).

3 Student-teacher ratio (比例)

In the US, the student-teacher ratio in secondary schools is about 10:1. That means each teacher has to take care of about ten students. In Hong Kong, the ratio is roughly 25:1.

4 School uniforms

Most schools in Hong Kong require students to wear uniforms with school badges (校徽) on them. Students who are improperly dressed are punished. Unlike Hong Kong, only 13% of schools in the US require students to wear uniforms.

5 Extra-curricular activities

American schools give a high priority (优先) to sports, clubs and activities. The two major sports for American students are football and basketball. Schools may sell “spirit” shirts to wear to inter-school competitions and raise money.

There are also some cultural groups such as music groups, marching bands and debate teams.

6 Conclusion

There are some differences between schools in the US and Hong Kong, but the schools in these two places have one common goal: to provide an enjoyable learning environment for students. ( ) 69. With today’s college application fees averaging around $ 80, you can expect to spend hundreds of dollars on college before you are even accepted into a school. One of the easiest ways to save money on college application fees before you begin applying is to narrow down your list of schools. To save money, try to limit the schools to which you apply to about 2-3 reach schools and 2-3 safety schools. At some schools, being a relative of a graduate can secure you a free application. If you are applying to a school where one of your parents or grandparents is a former graduate, check to see if you’ re qualified for it. Research the preferred method of applying for each school on your list. Some schools offer free online applications, yet charge a fee for paper submissions. This is because online applications save schools the cost of employing a staff member to physically enter the application information. Several states, such as Michigan and North Carolina, take part in College Application Week, where many schools in the participating states cancel their application fee for the week. Be sure to contact the schools to I j which you are applying to see if they participate in College Application Week and when the program takes place in that state. Apply for early admission. If you have already decided on which college is your top choice, consider applying under an Early Action or Early Decision admission program. If you are accepted, you won’t have to submit application fees to other schools. For more information regarding college applications and the fees associated with them, contact your high I school advisor or the admissions department at your school(s) of interest. ⑥青花瓷画注重______________,突出____________,挖掘_____________,因此青花瓷千百年来长盛不衰,具有独特审美价值。

III. Reading Comprehension Section B Directions: Read the following three passages. Each passage is followed by several questions or unfinished statements. For each of them there are four choices marked A, B, C and D. Choose the one that fits best according to the information given in the passage you have just read. (A) What do you want to be when you grow up? A teacher? A doctor? How about an ice-cream taster? Yes, there really is a job where you can get paid to taste ice-cream. Just ask John Harrison, an “Official Taste Tester” for the past 21 years. Testing helps manufacturers to be sure of a product’s quality. During his career Harrison has been responsible for approving large quantities of the sweet ice cream — as well as for developing over 75 flavors (味道). Some people think that it would be easy to do this job, after all, you just have to like ice cream, right? No —there’s more to the job than that, says Harrison, who has a degree in chemistry. He points out that a dairy or food-science degree would be very useful to someone wanting a career in this “cool” field. In a typical morning on the job, Harrison tastes and assesses 60 ice-cream samples. He lets the ice cream warm up to about 12℉. Harrison explains, “You get more flavor from warmer ice cream, which is why some kids like to stir it, creating ice-cream soup.” While the ice cream warms up, Harrison looks over the samples and grades each one on its appearance. “Tasting begins with the eyes,” he explains. He checks to see if the ice cream is attractive and asks himself, “Does the product have the color expected from that flavor?” Next it’s time to taste! Continuing to think up new ideas, try out new flavors, and test samples from so many kinds of ice cream each day keeps Harrison busy but happy — working at one cool job. 65. What is John Harrison’s job? A. An official. B. An ice-cream taster. C. A chemist. D. An ice-cream manufacturer.

上海市各区2017-2018年高三英语一模试题汇编--摘要写作(Summary Writing)-老师版(全部带答案已经校对)

IV. Summary Writing Directions: Read the following passage. Summarize the main idea and the main point(s) of the passage in no more than 60 words. Use your own words as far as possible. Wilderness Therapy When most people hear the term “psychotherapy”, they picture traditional talk therapy –someone sitting on a couch or chair talking about their troubling thoughts and feelings with a psychologist or other mental health professional. However, talk therapy isn’t the only type of psychotherapy used to help individuals struggling with depression, anxiety, and a whole host of other challenging disorders, emotional struggles, and other types of problems. In reality, therapy takes place in all kinds of settings. One of them is wilderness therapy. When the campsite is set up and the fire is lit, the doctor is in. Wilderness therapy is a successful, and sometimes controversial (有争议的) way to help troubled youth by teaching life and social skills on the hiking trail. Intensive group therapy and one-on-one sessions are coupled with outdoor activities like mountain climbing and fly-fishing to teach self-reliance and responsibility. Programs promise to reform even the most wayward (任性的) of offenders, including teens with depression, anger management issues, or eating disorders. While wilderness therapy can be effective, certain methods have come under fire for using unethical, and sometimes abusive (施虐的) techniques to help struggling youth. Wilderness programs are loosely regulated, so not all programs are staffed by qualified professionals. Upon closer examination, some “therapy” groups seemed to be just military-style boot camps with little mental health benefit. Even legal wilderness therapy groups have been criticized for partnering with teen escort (陪同) companies to forcibly remove unwilling participants from their homes to attend the program. While controversy and risk exist, wilderness therapy might be a creative way to teach life skills when other methods have failed. Keys: Wildness therapy is a kind of psychotherapy, which is a successful one with argument. It is aimed to reform youths in trouble by having them get involved in outdoor activities. It is criticized/blamed for some of its methods, lack of professional staff and not being mentally
