University leaders encourage students to overcome difficulties together
Since the Covid-19 outbreak on campus in the early morning of 24 November, the university has been doing its best to fight the pandemic under the guidance of the government, to organise the transfer and quarantine for the close contacts of the students tested positive, and to ensure that the basic needs of our on-campus students and staff are met.
The university is fully aware that this difficult time has had a great impact on the life of staff and students. In the afternoon of 25 November, Party Secretary Ying Xiong and Thomas Murphy, Chief Financial and Planning Officer, visited the student living area, thanking the students for their understanding and support to the university's pandemic prevention work, and encouraged students to stick together and overcome the difficulties with the university together.
Thomas said he had been communicating with students about the situation on campus via email. This time, he wanted to talk to them "face to face" about the latest update.
“This morning, unfortunately we have identified one further student who tested positive for coronavirus in central quarantine. We need to arrange for students, who are close contacts, to be transferred to a central quarantine hotel in Huzhou. We need to do this for the protection of yourselves and your fellow students.”
Thomas was well aware that this is not particularly good news for everyone, but he thought the university should be open and honest with the students about the situation.
Ying Xiong saw off the students who were about to leave for the transfer and expressed his heartfelt gratitude to the students for their cooperation and support. He noted that it is a difficult time for everyone but the university will surely win the battle against the pandemic with the joint efforts of every student. “I hope all our students will take good care of themselves during the quarantine, and see you all soon back in this beautiful campus,” he said.
In the meantime, Madam Xu, Chair of UNNC Board, received a letter from Professor Shearer West, Vice-Chancellor of University of Nottingham, in which Professor West expressed her sincere care of staff and students of UNNC. “Professor Nick Miles is keeping myself and our senior staff in the UK closely informed of activity and developments, and I know that he and his colleagues at Ningbo are doing everything possible to support our students and colleagues at this time,” she writes in the letter. “If I may be of any assistance to you during this period, please do advise me immediately, and I shall be only too happy to help.”
