Fenghuang Gucheng - One of most beautiful towns in China
Located on the either side of Tou River (Tou Jiang) in Xiangxi Prefecture in west of Hunan Province, the old town of Fenghuang (Fenghuang Gucheng, Chinese:凤凰古城, Fenghuang is Chinese for Phoenix) was once acclaimed as one of the most two most attractive towns in China by New Zealand-born writer Rewi Alley. This fascinating riverside town of ancient city walls and gate towers, houses on stilts overlooking the river and hoary temples dotted about the old town can easily fill a couple of days. Home to a lively population of the Miao and Tujia minorities, Fenghuang's architectural legacy shows distressing signs of neglect, so get to see it before it crumbles away under a combined onslaught of disrepair and over-development aimed at luring tour groups.
