What is Bambi about?
Based on the 1923 book Bambi, a Life in the Woods, Disney’s Bambi is an enduring classic that’s forever associated with the Walt Disney name. The studio’s fifth animated picture, Bambi’s a story about the son of the Great Prince of the Forest, born to an unnamed doe with whom he shares a close relationship.
Using nature, the forest, as its backdrop, Bambi essentially functions as a fairy tale preparing children for the various stages of maturation: adolescence, falling in love, loss, grief, building a family, weathering destruction and hardship, rebuilding.
It’s a resonant, powerful depiction of the hero’s journey, in effect, and anyone who’s seen it remembers the hurt of the film’s tragic death scene. Even in the fairy-tale forest of an anthropomorphic Disney film, deer aren’t immune to the dangers of the men who hunt them for sport.
